In our 50th episode, we feature our first non-drummer; the legendary Steve Lukather. In this very special episode, Steve talks about his bandmate and friend, the late great Jeff Porcaro. Luke was in NYC with his band Toto, who are celebrating their 35th anniversary as a band this year. Toto had a full day of press when we met, and it was made clear to me the day of the interview that I would have to keep it short because it was the last interview of the day. I originally aimed for an hour, then pushed for 45 minutes, and in the end was told I'd get 30 minutes. Luke's publicist was in the room, and I'm grateful he let it go a little longer than 30 minutes. Luke talks about meeting Jeff, What Jeff was like, Working in the studio with Jeff, Recording Michael Jackson's "Beat It," which features Steve, Jeff Porcaro, and Eddie Van Halen as the only musicians on the track (Steve Porcaro overdubbed synth later on), Jeff's health issues, and a very raw, emotional, and personal account of the day Jeff Porcaro passed away. This is rare stuff, and one day I hope to talk with Steve again about his own incredible and legendary career. Steve Lukather is one of the most prolific studio guitarists in the biz, and he's played with some of the greatest in the field - It was an honor to speak with him. A true Gentleman. Recorded at The London Hotel, NYC August 2013
