Episode 33 - Fred Coury

For the last 28 years Fred Coury has been The Drummer for Cinderella, though he managed to do a lot of other things in that time as well (he was even fired, albeit briefly). Fred talks about joining Cinderella, Subbing for Steven Adler in Guns N' Roses, The Ozzy Audition, Scoring Music for the LA Kings and The Detroit Pistons, Storm Chasing, the time David Lee Roth pissed in his drum case - and a lot more. There's a background noise present during the Interview - a hiss, reminiscent of old cassette tapes - it's just the air conditioner. It goes off and on throughout the interview. Pretend it's analog. Josh Freese is best known as Josh Freese, although you may also know him for his work with bands like Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Weezer, Devo, Sting, The Vandals, Paul Westerberg, his two year stint with Guns N Roses, his session work for the likes of everyone from Michael Bublé to Kelly Clarkson to Paramore and dozens of other artists and the list just keeps on growing. Josh invited me to his home and was a great host - we talked for over two and a half hours, and most of it is here. Epic. Recorded at Josh's home studio in Long Beach, CA April 2013

Jojo Mayer is best known as being a badass. He also leads a trio called Nerve. His dvd "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer" is still one of the top selling educational dvd's out there. Jojo talks about the industry today, working as a New York Drummer, the jazz scene, forging your own path, Dizzy Gillespie, and his philosophy on what it means to be an artist. Jonathan Mover is not only a badass Drummer, he's also the Founder and Editor in Chief of Drumhead Magazine. Mover also owned and operated Skyline Studios in NYC for years, engineering and producing many records there. Mover has played with GTR, Joe Satriani, Alice Cooper, Aretha Franklin, Fuel, Shakira, and many others. We met in a bar in NYC and we talked over beers for two hours. Mover talks about his entire career - as a Drummer, as a studio owner, and as the guy behind Drumhead Magazine. This guy's got some great stories. Recorded in NYC, March 2013

Mark Guiliana is best known for leading his own band, Beat Music. He also plays with Brad Mehldau in the duo project Mehliana, He plays jazz with his soon-to-be wife, Gretchen Parlato, and has played with many other supremely talented musicians including Tim Lefebvre, Avishai Cohen, Meshell Ndegeocello, Dhafer Youssef, Tigran Hamasyan, Matisyahu, and his old band Heernt. Mark talks about working with Mehldau and Parlato, as well as his philosophies on being a leader and a side man, how he chooses what gigs to do, baseball, parallels between sports and music, and a lot more. Mitch Marine currently plays for Dwight Yoakam. He's also played for Smashmouth and Tripping Daisy. Mitch talks about his time at North Texas State, His time in Denton, Texas, the time he quit playing drums and switched to bass, Moving to LA at age 38 and getting the gig with Smashmouth and later Dwight Yoakam, and a lot more. Mitch has been around and seen a lot, and there's gems in here, as well as a cameo appearance by a cockroach who got us two beers on the house. Good Times. Best known as the long time (only) Drummer for Weird Al Yankovic, Bermuda Schwartz is also a Ludwig drums aficionado. We talk extensively about Ludwig drums, vintage drums, collecting, shell composition, bearing edges - real drum geek stuff. Then we talk about his work with Weird Al. Remember - this guy has to replicate many different styles and sounds in the studio and live - Bermuda does it all like a character actor inhabiting a role. He's a great guy, and he loves to talk drums. He's also very tuned in to what's going on in the industry today. You can learn a lot from this guy. He's been around the block a few times. Zach Danziger is a badassmutha, as well as one of the masterminds behind Mister Barrington, along with keyboardist Oli Rockberger and bassist Owen Biddle. We talk about this new project, as well as his time working with Tim Lefebvre, his time as house drummer for the Caroline Rhea show, his years with Wayne Krantz, growing up in a showbiz family with a mother who was a night club singer and a father who was a comedy writer/pianist, his time with pianist Michel Camillo, missed opportunities - including work with Beck and Hiram Bullock - as well as many other topics including coffee and New York City, and the Dave Weckl shoes. Michael Shrieve burst onto the music scene at 18 years old with Santana. His drum solo during "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock still captivates - he was 20 years old. Michael Shrieve played on the classic Santana hits - "Black Magic Woman,""Evil Ways,""Oye Como Va," and many more. We talk about his time with Santana, as well as his time working with Automatic Man, the project "Go" with Steve Winwood, his solo work, his soundtrack work, working with Neil Schon, Sammy Hagar and Kenny Aaronson in HSAS, Seattle life, his current band Michael Shrieve's Spellbinder, working with George Harrison, Mick Jagger, and lots of great stories including his years hanging with Elvin Jones, advice he received from Steve Gadd, a life of being in the right place at the right time - and being prepared. Liberty talks about Working with Phil Ramone, Touring with Billy Joel, His Drum Sound, Life as a Musician, Working with Stevie Nicks, Meatloaf, and getting offers from the likes of Paul McCartney - Liberty's got some great stories he's collected along the way. Liberty has seen it all, and he talks openly about what happened between him and Billy Joel. Before that he played with Julio Iglesias, scoring the gig in Miami where he was studying at the University of Miami's School of Music. Prior to that, Brendan studied with Tommy Igoe. We talk about studying with Igoe, scoring the Iglesias and Shakira gigs, as well as gigs he flies to China to do - with Superstars you've never heard of - We get into his life as a working musician, the traveling, recording at home, and did I mention travel? Thomas Lang started his professional career at a young age, and by age 18 he was playing large concert halls with fellow Austrian Falco, who was an international superstar at the time with two major hits under his belt - "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Der Komissar." Thomas went on to play with everyone from Glenn Hughes to Robbie Williams, from Paul Gilbert to The Spice Girls, from Mick Jones to Kylie Minogue - and a lot more. Dave was finishing up a six night run at the famed Village Vanguard in NYC with The Bad Plus when I caught up with him. We talk residencies, Vinny Appice, Destroying the myth of jazz in NYC, Life in Minnesota, Home Decorating, and more. Recorded in two parts - After playing his first set, Dave and I talked for half an hour (you'll hear him called to stage). After his second and final set, Dave and I resumed our conversation. Cheap Trick Drummer Daxx Nielsen was born for the job. When Original Drummer Bun E. Carlos stepped down, the son of guitarist Rick Nielsen stepped up. Daxx had previously played with Dick Dale and Brandi Carlisle, and we talk about those past gigs as well as how his current gig came to be. We even talk about a good reason you may want to start packing floor tiles in your stick bag. The first part of the interview was recorded at a bar in Tribeca, NYC. Toss Panos is a Drummers' Drummer. He's played with everyone from Steve Vai to Faith Hill to Robben Ford and Michael McDonald to Steve Lukather and Chris Cornell. Recently Toss was one of the 12 drummers to be featured on Hans Zimmer's Superman track, and he also played on a Grammy Winning Album by Draco Rosa.
